Population Based Intervention

population based Intervention

Population based intervention is one of the key pillars of the program which has as objective to raise awareness on NCDs, their risk factors through life style modification practices in the communities. This approach is directed towards the entire population and it’s aimed at ensuring that the community at large is reached out to with the NCD message. The desired outcome here is to promote improved quality of life, reduction in levels of human suffering, disabilities and deaths resulting from preventable NCDs. In order to make a great impact and reach out to a larger audience, the program has equally engaged in social media sensitization as well as commemoration of international NCD related events such as: World Hearts Day, Global Week for Action on NCDs, Breast Cancer Awareness Day, World Diabetes Day, World Hypertension, World No Tobacco Day and World Diabetes Day amongst many others.

a. Know Your Numbers (KYN) Approach

As another population-based intervention strategy, the NCD-PCP developed the Know Your Numbers (KYN) approach in the year 2016 that is aimed at raising awareness on NCDs and encouraging members of the community to get screened for NCDs, thus adopt health seeking behaviours considering that NCDs are silent killers and are only diagnosed when complications have set in since they have no signs and symptoms. As part of the KYN strategy, health care providers at health facilities offer health education to patients and care givers at the hospital out-patient departments (OPDs), in the wards and on special clinic days and in the communities as a way to encourage health seeking behaviors and improve quality of life. As part of the KYN package, screening for vital health numbers (blood sugar, blood pressure, body mass index, waist circumference, weight and height), life style modification counseling and referrals are offered to the clients. The target population for KYN awareness raising is the entire community/ population at large but screening targets only apparently healthy individuals in the community or care givers at the health facilities. Patients are completely exempted considering that their vital health numbers might already be compromised in one way or the other due to the disease condition. They are however encouraged to carry out a KYN screening one they have fully recovered from the disease.

  • Exercise for Health Activities

The NCD program also runs a physical exercise program that takes a majority of health facilities within the CBC health services with the aim to encourage staff, patients and members of the community to adopt regular physical exercise as a means of NCDs prevention and control. This activity also serves as a community-based intervention strategy.

  • Healthy Life Style Club Activities

Healthy life style clubs activities permitted members of the community who are not necessarily NCD patients to come together every month for health education and lifestyle counseling on NCDs. This activity was initiated in Banso Baptist Hospital and has now been expanded the other NCD program sites in different regions of the country. With a lot of positive feedback received from the beneficiaries daily. This is an effective way to encourage community members on NCDs prevention and control.

  • Sensitization and Screening in Churches during Conferences

The NCD program was invited to carry out sensitization and screening in churches during the CBC men’s and women’s conferences and many others. During these events, Christians were sensitized, screened and counseled on importance of adherence to treatment for those at risk or diagnosed with any form of NCD

b. Radio Health Talk

The program was invited to a series of radio programs to talk about NCDs with the aim of reaching out to a wider audience. Some of the radio stations include: CBC radio, Christian Broadcasting Station Bamenda, CRTV Bamenda, NDEFCAM Radio, Radio Hotcoaco.

c. Expansion of NCD program activities

Still, as a means to enhance awareness creation through population-based intervention, the program throughout the year 2021 has made tremendous efforts to expand NCD program activities to 4 additional health facilities within the CBCHS which are: Ngounso Baptist Health Centre; Nkoabang Baptist Health Centre; Bonaberi Baptist Health Centre and Kribi Baptist Health Centre. Efforts have been made to put in place well equipped KYN units which are mainly involved with sensitization and screening for vital health numbers as well as; D&H units for follow-up and care of persons diagnosed with either diabetes or hypertension at these health facilities

d. Inclusive NCD Services

To render NCD program services accessible to all, the NCD-PCP has been striving to make her services as inclusive as possible both in terms of infrastructure and services provision. The program is making efforts to facilitate KYN screening and diabetes & hypertension care for persons with disabilities. In this light, in the course of the 2021 project year, all NCD program data collection tools (data reporting booklets, registers) as well as IEC have been modified to capture inclusive data as well as inclusive sensitization messages.
